The main aim of the breed was to hunt gazelle, which requires great strength and endurance. Other game for this breed is hare, fox and jackal. In the west, these dogs are used in racing and shows due to their great speed and refined look.

This breed was a royal dog of Egypt, and may be as old as the civilization of Egypt. Muslims valued these creatures very high.
